WAGM: Female teens build confidence through Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute

Houlton High School junior Lizzie Dunn has been an artist for as long as she can remember. But in the last two years, her work has taken on a new meaning.

“It’s become less about making something that looks good, and more about how I feel,” she said.

That’s a direct result of Dunn participating in the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute. The program is three years long…students begin as sophomores and focus on their values, and then as juniors focus on their voices, and then as seniors focus on their visions. The program kicks off each year with a one day session where the girls hear from Snowe herself, and is then followed by students meeting monthly with trained advisers.

Christina McAnuff is the executive director of the institute. She visited the Houlton Rotary Club on Monday to share about its success
